South Alabama Leans on Bishop Davenport Again While the Trenches Get Rebuilt
2026 Preseason OutlookBishop Davenport is back under center, and that continuity is basically the whole offense right now. The Jaguars lost 30 players to the portal this cycle, headlined skill-position-wise by Jeremy Scott's departure for TCU along with tight ends Trent Thomas (Tennessee) and Brec Long (North Texas), and while none of that touches the quarterback room directly, it thins out the group Davenport has to work with. The broader profile here is bottom-tier overall, with an offense that projects as merely below average now carrying a defense and special teams unit both graded bottom-tier, which is a tough combination for a team coming off a 4-8 season. The offensive line is effectively being reset, and with Davenport as the singular known quantity, targets and blocking assignments around him are largely question marks heading into fall camp.
JP+ pegs South Alabama at 5.7 projected wins, a number shaped heavily by a schedule that sends the Jaguars on the road to Kentucky, Tulane, and Marshall while offering more favorable home dates against Ohio, ULM, and Southeastern Louisiana. The gap between that projection and any rosier market expectation traces back to the offensive line reset and the concentration risk of leaning so hard on one returning quarterback behind a rebuilt front, even with the defense showing more stable continuity than a year ago. If the reworked line gels quickly and Davenport finds new targets to replace what Scott and the departed tight ends took with them, this group can round into a bowl-eligible team by year's end. If not, another season hovering around .500 or worse is the more likely outcome.
