Mason Heintschel and a Loaded Defense Aim for a Clean Path to Charlotte

2026 Preseason Outlook

Mason Heintschel returns as the starter, and everything Pitt hopes to accomplish runs through him avoiding the kind of quarterback attrition that hit the roster this offseason. Eli Holstein, who posted 56.1 PPA before landing at Virginia, is gone, but Heintschel was the guy under center last year and stays put, giving the offense a known building block even as Kenny Johnson (31.9 PPA, Texas Tech) and Malachi Thomas (20.2 PPA, LSU) also left via the portal. The offense projects as roughly average, which is fine, because the defense is again the engine — it grades out above average and returns with stable continuity, even after Randy Bates retired and Cory Sanders was promoted to run that side of the ball. Special teams lags behind, a below-average unit that could nibble at margins in close ACC games. The transfer math wasn't kind on paper — 21 departures and 132.0 PPA out the door against 16 arrivals worth 41.6 PPA in — but La'Vell Wright arrives from Western Kentucky with 32.2 PPA to help replace lost backfield production, and the offensive line's 68% returning continuity gives Heintschel some protection while he builds around a mostly new receiving corps.

JP+ projects 6.5 wins, while the market's Under 7.5 sits at 45% EV, suggesting the number is priced close to fair value with a slight lean toward the under. The road slate is the separator here — trips to Miami, Louisville, and Virginia Tech will decide whether this team pushes toward the top of the ACC or settles into the middle of the pack, while home dates against Syracuse, Miami (OH), and Bucknell should be manageable. If Heintschel takes a real step forward and the defense plays like the above-average unit the profile suggests, a penalty-free run through the softer part of the schedule could push Pitt well past 6.5 and into real ACC title contention. If the receiving corps and special teams issues linger, this settles back into a bowl-eligible-or-bust season with the ceiling capped by the road trips.
