Oregon Enters 2026 With Dante Moore and Nothing Less Than a Championship Standard

2026 Preseason Outlook

Dante Moore is back, and so is every expectation that comes with it. After an 11-1 season that still ended in another CFP exit, the Ducks return their franchise quarterback as a potential top-five pick with a roster built to finish what the last two years didn't. The offense and defense both grade out as elite in the qualitative profile, with special teams landing around average, which means the margin for error is thin only in the sense that anything short of a title will feel like underachievement. The staff turned over its coordinator titles from within, promoting Drew Mehringer to run the offense and Chris Hampton to run the defense, both internal hires that keep scheme continuity intact even as personnel shifts around them. On offense, that continuity is real but uneven — quarterback return share sits at 100%, the offensive line returns 75%, but skill-position turnover is heavier, with Noah Whittington, Malik Benson, Kenyon Sadyn Sadiq and Gary Bryant Jr. all gone. Sadiq's departure for the NFL Draft cost 41.4 PPA at tight end, and the receiving corps leans on newcomer Iverson Hooks, who arrives from UAB with 58.5 PPA of production. The bigger portal story is at backup quarterback, where Dylan Raiola arrives from Nebraska with 74.6 PPA — a name worth knowing even with Moore entrenched as the starter — while Luke Moga departed for New Mexico. The defense, by contrast, brings back a stable core with no major role-loss flags, which should let Hampton install his system without needing to answer a dozen personnel questions at once.

JP+ projects 9.6 wins, and the toughest road tilts against Ohio State, USC and Illinois will decide whether that number holds or climbs. The schedule softens at home against Northwestern, Boise State and Portland State, giving Oregon a runway to build rhythm before the difficult stretch. The gap between projection and the sport's championship-or-bust framing comes down to those road environments and how quickly the rebuilt receiving corps and new-look defensive coordination gel under real pressure. If Moore plays like a top-five pick and the retooled skill groups replace Whittington and Benson's production fast, the ceiling is exactly what the preseason hype demands. If the receiver turnover lingers into October, 9.7 wins might be the outcome instead of the floor.
