Mississippi State Looks to Kamario Taylor and a Rebuilt Defense to End the Losing Skid

2026 Preseason Outlook

The headline act in Starkville is Kamario Taylor, who's positioned to turn into a genuine statistical force behind an offense that already profiles as above average and now adds Marquis Johnson, the transfer wideout from Missouri who led the incoming class with 17.4 PPA. That offensive identity carries real concentration risk, though — the quarterback room turned over completely, with Blake Shapen gone and Luke Kromenhoek off to South Florida, leaving AJ Swann from Appalachian State to battle for a job with zero returning starts at the position. Lebby's offense returns as the system in place, not a new hire, which offers some continuity even as the skill groups reshuffle around Taylor. Defensively, the unit projects as roughly average, but it's more stable than the offense on paper, and new coordinator Zach Arnett — back in the building where Lebby once coordinated — inherits a group without major flagged losses even as Amaree Williams arrives from Florida State to add juice off the edge. Special teams, by contrast, looks like a legitimate strength, and shoring up penalties and inconsistent execution there could be the difference between hovering around .500 and finally posting a winning record for the first time since 2022.

JP+ projects 5.1 wins, a modest number that reflects the uncertainty at quarterback and the defense's average grade rather than any lack of talent on the roster. The schedule doesn't do this team many favors, with road trips to Texas, LSU, and Ole Miss front-loading the difficulty, but home dates against Vanderbilt, ULM, and Tennessee Tech offer a real path to build a foundation. If the QB competition resolves cleanly and Taylor's breakout is as loud as the roster suggests, this offense can carry a defense still finding its footing under Arnett toward a winning season. If the quarterback spot stays unsettled into October, 5.1 wins could be the ceiling rather than the floor.
