Will Stein Takes Over a Kentucky Roster Rebuilt Through the Portal
2026 Preseason OutlookWill Stein's first season in Lexington arrives with the roster looking almost nothing like the one that went 5-7 a year ago. Cutter Boley is gone to Arizona State, taking his 57.9 PPA production with him, which means the new signal-caller will be whoever wins the job out of a competition that includes Notre Dame transfer Kenny Minchey. Stein didn't stop at quarterback — he brought in Lance Heard from Tennessee to anchor the offensive line, added receivers Xavier Daisy from UAB and Nic Anderson from LSU to replace departed pass-catchers Cameron Miller and Hardley Gilmore IV, and touched nearly every position group along the way. The offense projects as roughly average given the quarterback uncertainty and just 50% returning production, while the defense — which carried this program at times last season — grades out above average despite moderate attrition in coverage roles. Special teams should be a real strength, which matters when so much else is being sorted out on the fly.
JP+ pegs Kentucky at 4.4 projected wins, a modest number that reflects genuine uncertainty at quarterback and along the perimeter more than any collapse in talent. The schedule doesn't do Stein any favors, either — road trips to Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Tennessee headline the slate, while home dates against Louisville, South Alabama, and Youngstown State offer the clearest paths to wins. The gap between that projection and however the market frames Kentucky likely comes down to how quickly Minchey or a competing quarterback establishes rhythm with a receiving corps that's also been remade. If the quarterback competition resolves cleanly and Heard stabilizes the line early, Kentucky's above-average defense and elite special teams could push this team past its projection. If the offensive transition drags into October, a rebuilding year near the middle of the SEC is the more likely outcome.
