James Madison Brings In Billy Napier With A Defense Built To Cover For An Offense In Transition

2026 Preseason Outlook

Billy Napier takes over a program coming off a 12-1 season, and he inherits a roster defined by what left rather than what's staying. Alonza Barnett III, who produced 91.1 PPA a year ago, is gone to UCF, and the starting job now belongs to whoever wins the open competition — the new signal-caller arrives without the benefit of returning ownership over this offense. Wayne Knight and Landon Ellis also left via the portal, stripping away a rusher and a top receiving option in the same offseason. James Madison countered with 37 arrivals, including quarterback Davi Belfort from UCF and offensive lineman Tyler Brown from Colorado, but replacing 214.2 PPA of departed production with 20.9 PPA of new additions is a steep climb. The offense projects as roughly average, which means the defense — already framed as above-average — will again be asked to carry the operation, even as it deals with its own coverage and edge attrition up front.

JP+ projects 7.6 wins, a number that reflects both the defensive floor and the very real uncertainty surrounding a rebuilt quarterback room, receiving corps, and offensive line. The toughest stretch includes road trips to San Diego State, UConn, and Georgia Southern, while home dates with Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, and Wagner offer the clearest paths to bank wins early. The gap between preseason expectation and last year's 12-1 finish comes down to continuity — Napier is walking into a proven_hc_fbs opportunity, but the quarterback change, an offensive line reset, and thinned defensive depth all add variance beyond what the record alone would suggest. If the new starter settles quickly and the offensive line gels, James Madison's defense can push this team back toward the top of the Sun Belt. If the transition drags, a step back toward the middle of the conference is the more likely outcome.
